What Is TRICARE Health Insurance?

TRICARE is the healthcare program for active duty service members, retirees, and their families. It’s a comprehensive program that combines the resources of military hospitals and clinics with a network of civilian healthcare providers to offer a wide range of medical services.

TRICARE Prime and TRICARE Select

Active duty service members are required to enroll in TRICARE Prime. Retirees and others who are eligible can choose between TRICARE Prime and TRICARE Select. Prime generally has lower out-of-pocket costs but less flexibility in choosing providers, while Select offers more provider choice but may have higher costs.

TRICARE Groups A and B

TRICARE beneficiaries are divided into Group A and Group B based on when the service member entered active duty. Group A includes those who entered active duty before 2018, while Group B includes those who entered in 2018 or later. This distinction can affect certain aspects of coverage and costs.

Retiree Options

Retirees have several options for continuing their health coverage through TRICARE:

For Medicare-eligible Retirees:
TRICARE For Life (TFL) provides wraparound coverage for those who are eligible for Medicare Part A and B.
Retired Reserve (TRR):
This plan is available to retired National Guard and Reserve members under the age of 60.

Do They Cover Drug and Alcohol Detox?

While TRICARE does cover medically necessary substance abuse treatment, including detox, Fenix Recovery focuses on outpatient services and does not provide detox services.
